The International Council of Integrative and Ancestral Herbal Practice (ICIAHP) upholds a unified ethical and professional standard for all practitioners  operating under its lineage. These standards ensure safety, integrity, cultural respect, and excellence across all levels of herbal practice.

Practitioners must conduct themselves with honesty, transparency, and professionalism. They must:

• Represent their training and credentials accurately

• Provide truthful information about herbs, safety, and limitations

• Maintain confidentiality and protect client information• Avoid misleading claims or exaggerated promises

ICIAHP practitioners honor the cultural, ancestral, and traditional origins of herbal knowledge. They must:

• Acknowledge the cultures and lineages from which teachings arise

• Avoid cultural appropriation or misuse of sacred practices

• Practice with humility, gratitude, and respect

• Protect sacred knowledge from exploitation

Herbalism is a living lineage, not a commodity

Practitioners must prioritize safety in all herbal recommendations and formulations. They must:

• Understand contraindications, interactions, and risks

• Refer clients to medical professionals when appropriate

• Avoid diagnosing, prescribing, or treating medical conditions

• Stay within their ICIAHPdefined scope of practice

ICIAHP practitioners integrate:

They must:

• Stay informed through continuing education

• Use herbs responsibly and knowledgeably

• Avoid unsupported or harmful claims

The International Council of Integrative and Ancestral Herbal Practice is:

• a standard setting body

• a guardian of lineage and tradition

• a certifying authority

• a research and formulation institution

It is not a school, course, coaching program, or membership club. The curriculum is the training arm of ICIAHP. ICIAHP itself is the institution that defines what mastery means

Practitioners must remain committed to lifelong learning. They must:

• Continue education beyond certification

• Seek mentorship when needed

• Contribute to the herbal community

• Uphold ICIAHP standards at all times

International Council of Integrative and Ancestral Herbal Practice

Scope of Practice

The Scope of Practice defines what ICIAHP practitioners are permitted to do at each level. It protects the public, the practitioner, and the integrity of the profession.

Level Specific Scope of Practice

Level 1 — Apprentice Herbalist (ICIAHPA)

May:

• Study herbs for personal learning• Prepare basic herbal remedies for personal use• Participate in supervised practice

May nNOT:

• Work with clients• Offer herbal advice• Create products for sale

Level 2 — Practitioner Herbalist (ICIAHPP)

May:

• Educate the public• Create basic herbal products• Offer general wellness support• Teach introductory herbal classes

May NOT:

• Conduct clinical assessments• Diagnose or treat conditions• Create advanced formulations• Work with complex cases

Level 3 — Certified Herbalist (ICIAHPC)

Scope varies by specialty track, but generally may:

• Work with clients within their specialty• Create and sell herbal products• Conduct nonclinical assessments• Support wellness through herbs, lifestyle, and energetics• Teach at foundational and intermediate levels

May NOT:

• Diagnose medical conditions• Prescribe medications• Replace medical care• Perform clinical interventions outside their training

Level 4 — Master Herbalist (ICIAHPM)

May:

• Lead advanced herbal practice• Conduct complex assessments (nonmedical)• Create advanced formulations• Mentor apprentices and practitioners• Teach at all levels• Contribute to research and publications

May NOT:

• Diagnose, prescribe, or treat medical conditions• Present themselves as medical professionals

Level 5 — Council Fellow (ICIAHPF)

May:

• Serve in leadership roles within ICIAHP• Develop curriculum, standards, and research• Represent ICIAHP internationally• Mentor practitioners and masters• Contribute to lineage preservation

Fellows uphold the highest ethical and professional standards

ICIAHP practitioners operate within a clear, ethical, and safe framework that honors:

• science• spirit• lineage• culture• community• ecology• professional integrity

This Code of Ethics & Scope of Practice is binding for all practitioners recognized by the International Council of Integrative and Ancestral Herbal Practice.
